the archivist of personal narrative

so - my Tell Motel project:

the acquisition and archiving of personal narratives in audio interview and transcription forms
(transcription to give a visual/ material experience of the text)

acquiring stories through responses from back page ads / craigslist / online posts etc

the reenactment of personal narratives _ who? how? what mediums involved? where? where is the audience?

issues with site specificity in relation to audience participation and engagement vs. the the inherent nomadic / non-site specificity of transitional dwelling spaces

Reenactment as a form of displaying collections of moments

What possibilities do re-enactments offer in revisiting events of the past? How is history transformed or reclaimed in the process of re-enactments? This course actively researches artistic strategies of re-enactment in contemporary media art and performance, investigating the increased interest in this practice and its variable forms. Students produce work based on their interests and in response to assigned readings (Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud, Italo Calvino, Inke Arns, Henry Bergson) and works viewed in class. (Jean Rouch, Jeremy Deller,Rod Dickinson, Ant Farm and T.R. Uthco, Pierre Hughe, Zbignew Libera, Omer Fast, Felix Gmelin, Daniela Comani, Artur Zmijewski, Marina Abramovich, etc). Knowledge of video or photography is required. Supplemental technical workshops will be provided if needed.

Research Presentation Statement

For my presentation on an aspect of collecting, I am focusing on he idea of “Collection as Documentation.” I am in the process of researching artists who collect and organize personal narratives. I am interested in developing a deeper understanding of the techniques of organizing and displaying photographic, filmed, text and audio narrated documentation.

The artists who I am focusing on are new media artist Jonathan Harris, Bay Area artist Robin Kandel, and David Lynch’s new Interview Project. Harris considers himself a “collector of stories”. He uses new media (websites and programs) to organize fragments of personal narratives. David Lynch’s Interview Project is a series of short impromptu interviews of randomly selected people in small towns across the U.S. “A roadtrip where people have been found, and interviewed.” Reconstructing Memories, Robin Kandel uses the personal narratives of her parents to create video installations, using reenactment and abstracted video.

Thoughts and Questions on Collecting

what does it mean to collect personal narratives?
what does one do with them once they are acquired? How would i display, organize, depict? who would i share them with? is it ethical to do so? what is my purpose? why is David Lynch collecting interviews with random people?

Collecting Scrabble Words

Lately I have rediscovered my love of Scrabble using the Facebook Scrabble application, which allows me to play with friends and relatives all over. I am interested in the idea of collecting as document - or the objects collected as the abstract symbols of the narrative of the relationship between the two players - so i began to record the words used in each game. Maybe write a story with each of them? The application requires you to title the game, so i suppose the stories each already have a title. well - its an idea.

Journal on The Paradigm Of Collecting

I am currently taking a class at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, taught by Gerald Bleem, titled "The Paradigm of Collecting". This blog is essentially a journal / sketchbook / logbook for class. It is a way for me to "organize" my thoughts about Collecting. I will explore concerns of accumulation, materialism, excess, organization and presentation. I will post images, ramblings, random ideas, links to websites. It will include documentation as a form of collection. This will all be very disorganized, just like a journal.
